Kentucky optometrists holding a therapeutic license must obtain fifteen (15) approved hours of continuing education annually. At least 7 of these hours must relate to diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye diseases.

As of July 2011, Kentucky optometrists holding an expanded therapeutic procedures licensure must obtain 20 hours of approved continuing education annually. Five (5) of the 20 hours must be on the expanded therapeutic procedures, which cannot be obtained on the internet.

As of July 2012, All Kentucky optometrists with a DEA number must have two (2) of their total number of hours (either 15 or 20) must be on KASPER, pain management or addiction disorders.

For all Kentucky licensed optometrists, a maximum of two (2) hours may be practice management CE for their license renewal.

For all Kentucky licensed optometrists, a maximum of five (5) hours annually may be accepted from one of the following: internet, correspondence or audio digest. These five hours cannot be on the expanded therapeutic procedures.

To be acceptable for license renewal, all optometry continuing education must be sponsored by a state, regional (multi-state) or national optometric association*, an accredited college of optometry or an accredited college of medicine.

*National optometric association would be the American Optometric Association, American Academy of Optometry, College of Vision Development and National Optometric Association.

All COPE courses and OEP courses must be sponsored by a state, regional or national optometric association, an accredited school of optometry or an accredited college of medicine.

Remember all CE, including Internet CE, must be given by a provider approved by the KBOE. If you are in doubt be sure to check with the KBOE to make sure your course will count. All education given by the KOA meets the requirements of the KBOE.
